Unit 6: The Global Village theory
Theorist Marshall McLuhan in his boom the 'understanding media: The Extensions of Man' (1964) suggested that one day we would live in a 'global village' where, owing to advancements in technology we would be more interconnected with each other. This in turn would bring about a tribal mentality, focusing on 'in and out groups' - in a political context this can be seen as discriminatory and having negative connotations.
Positives:
- Interconnected: can connect to anyone in the world over the internet.
- Can connect to people with similar interests
- Gives people opportunities with their interests within their 'global village'.
Negatives:
- Political disagreements
- Opinions, cyberbullying and trolling. e.g. body image.
- Crimes such as grooming, pedophilia, scams, fraud.
- Not everyone can afford internet access.
